DeltaProto produces PCBA prototypes within a week

DeltaProto specialises in the rapid production of Printed Circuit Board Assemblies (PCBA) prototypes and has recently moved to the Fraunhofer Innovation Platform for Advanced Manufacturing at Kennispark.

A PCBA is a board on which electronic components such as chips, resistors and capacitors are soldered. Copper tracks on the printed circuit boards conduct electronic signals. This makes it an essential component for virtually all modern devices and industrial machines. What makes DeltaProto unique is that they can produce a PCBA prototype within a week and that changes to an order are possible.

DeltaProto accelerates the development of innovative products by enabling real-life testing for its customers in the early stages of development. Harm Slijkhuis, CCO DeltaProto: “Producing a prototype is not a complex process, which means we can deliver relatively easily and quickly and our people don’t need years of training. After a few hours of training, they can operate all the machines needed to make the prototypes. The parts are universal and we order them in Europe, America and China. We have automated this ordering process because it takes an enormous amount of time to order manually. Now the order is placed in a few minutes and we receive the parts within one or two days.”

Choice between Eindhoven and Enschede

Michiel Wanninkhof, CTO DeltaProto: “We sponsor several student teams, including the RoboTeam and the SolorTeam at the University of Twente. We noticed that the student teams benefited greatly from our prototypes, which are quick to produce and adapt. They want to experiment as much as possible, so it’s ideal that you can make adjustments that can be quickly tested in practice. This meant we were already regularly in Enschede, so when we were looking for another location besides Amsterdam, Enschede was also on our list. Although, if you do anything with electronics, Eindhoven is actually the most logical choice. Together with Novel-T, the guys from Homey and a number of other electronics companies, we went on a trade mission to CES in Las Vegas and came to the conclusion that Twente is home to many electronics companies that are relevant to us. Combined with the increasingly important ChipTech cluster in this region, this made Enschede at least as logical a choice for us as Eindhoven.

Warm welcome

Harm adds: ‘We couldn’t have wished for a warmer welcome, both from the municipality of Enschede and from Oost NL. Nothing was too much trouble and everyone was very helpful. Not only in finding a suitable location, but also, for example, by pointing out subsidy opportunities. All this certainly played a part in our choice of Twente.’

Adjustments over a cup of coffee

On 20 March, DeltaProto organised an open day for its new location in the Fraunhofer Innovation Platform for Advanced Manufacturing. Michiel: “The open day was well attended and immediately resulted in a number of orders. In addition to being able to assemble the desired prototype within a few days, many companies at Kennispark also benefit greatly from our location around the corner. If it turns out that some adjustments are still needed, they can drop by and we can modify their PCBA prototype while having a cup of coffee, so to speak, so that they can get back to work right away. We can also respond quickly to companies that are further away. To this end, we have added a good camera at the end of the production process, so that we can check remotely whether the print is 100% compliant with the requirements. Any adjustments can also be communicated quickly on the basis of the detailed photo. We archive all photos and accompanying specifications so that our customers can easily have the approved prototype produced in larger quantities based on this information.”

Harm: ‘Since we moved to Kennispark, a number of companies have fortunately already found us, but there are many more companies here in Twente that we are sure would benefit from our fast production process for prototypes, so if you are interested and would like to know what we can do for you, please contact us at info@deltaproto.com.’
