Aluvia Photonics and PHIX Collaborate on Integrated Optical Amplifiers, Unveiling New PIC-EDWA Devices at Photonics West 2025

Aluvia Photonics, a leading innovator in photonic integrated circuits (PICs), proudly announces the successful demonstration of its next-generation C and L-band integrated optical amplifiers, known as Erbium-Doped Waveguide Amplifiers (PIC-EDWAs). Developed in collaboration with PHIX Photonics Assembly, these amplifiers leverage Aluvia’s proprietary AlOx:Er3+ gain technology to deliver high external fiber-to-fiber gain (>25 dB) and low noise figure (comparable to EDFA’s), while offering integration possibilities on various PIC platforms, like silicon photonics.

These new devices mark a significant milestone in advancing amplifier integration for optical communications and quantum computing.

PIC-EDWA Evaluation Kits Now Available

To support industry adoption, Aluvia is opening reservations for PIC-EDWA evaluation kits at Photonics West 2025. These kits showcase the power of Er-doped AlOx waveguides, offering high gain, low noise figure and exceptional power handling. The development devices are available as packaged dies, allowing customers to perform application-specific performance characterization and integration into photonics systems.

Future Development Plans

Building on this success, Aluvia and PHIX are jointly working to further develop integrated PIC-EDWAs tailored to application markets such as coherent optical communications and quantum. Together, they will establish a robust supply chain to support future scaling in response to customers’ specific requirements.

Steve Stoffels, CEO of Aluvia Photonics, remarked:

It is remarkable to see PIC-EDWA performance reaching levels comparable to the gold standard of incumbent fibre amplifiers. Our miniaturized solution has the potential to revolutionize optical amplifier deployment in applications where fibre solutions fall short due to size, cost and/or scalability constraints. Collaborating with PHIX to achieve these industry-relevant results has been a privilege. As we move forward with offering PIC-EDWA evaluation kits to lead customers, the role of packaging and integration becomes increasingly critical. We are excited to continue partnering with PHIX to advance this technology from prototyping and evaluation kits to commercial offerings. We look forward to further collaboration with PHIX and our customers.

Albert Hasper, CEO of PHIX, added:

The doped AlOx process developed by Aluvia is truly remarkable. We’re thrilled to see the potential of this technology in key photonics markets, such as advanced coherent optical communication systems and quantum computing. As an integrator of photonics solutions, PHIX is proud to continue contributing through our packaging and wafer-scale flip-chip capabilities, enabling industry-grade EDWAs for Aluvia and its customers.
